The Formula 1 2026 season marks a revolutionary reset, introducing a new set of regulations that fundamentally change both the cars and how they are driven. The sport is set for a tactical reboot where engineers, energy management, and driver intelligence will matter more than ever before.
The new generation of cars will be significantly more compact and agile. They are 20 cm shorter and 10 cm narrower than their predecessors, with a 30 kg weight reduction for teams meeting the minimum limit. This makes them more maneuverable in slow corners and promotes closer, wheel-to-wheel racing. Smaller tires also contribute to the overall weight drop, while wheel covers are now less restricted, allowing teams more design freedom.
A major shift comes from active aerodynamics. The traditional DRS system is gone, replaced by “straight mode” and “corner mode.” Both the front and rear wings become movable, reducing drag on straights while preserving downforce in corners. All cars can use this feature wherever the FIA permits, not just for overtaking. This, combined with simplified aerodynamic elements like flaps, endplates, and the floor, drastically reduces the “dirty air” effect, enabling following cars to stay closer without losing performance.
The power unit sees equally dramatic changes. The 1.6L V6 turbo engine remains, but the MGU-H is removed for simplicity. The MGU-K gains much higher regeneration and power output capability, creating a nearly 50/50 split between thermal and electric power. Thermal power is not capped by regulations, while electric power is limited. Fuel becomes 100% sustainable, potentially creating performance gaps between teams based on energy efficiency and power characteristics.
These changes put the driver back at the center. Managing energy recovery and deployment without losing time will be crucial. The new “overtaking mode” replaces DRS, providing bursts of electrical energy when chasing a rival. Races will become more tactical, rewarding those who best balance battery usage and drag reduction. With new engine manufacturers joining and projects expanding, the 2026 grid promises a leveling of the playing field.
This is not just another season – it is a full reset. Rally driver and engineer Jordi San Andrés, who spent 13 months at Aston Martin F1’s Vehicle Performance & Simulation department working on the 2026 regulations, highlights the key features: smaller dimensions for agility, active aerodynamics for efficiency, and a power unit that emphasizes energy strategy. The cars will be slower in high-speed corners due to reduced downforce, but the intensity of racing and decision-making will skyrocket, making every lap a test of both machine and human.
