Paul Magnier claimed the first maglia rosa of the 2026 Giro d’Italia after a thrilling sprint finish in Burgas. The French rider outpaced his rivals in a chaotic final kilometer that saw a late crash, securing the stage win and the overall lead.

The 156-kilometer opening stage from Nessebar to Burgas was expected to end in a bunch sprint, and it delivered on that promise. Lidl-Trek’s Jonathan Milan started as the favorite, having won the points jersey in his three previous Giro appearances. As the finish approached, his team began to take control, but the final stretch was marked by tension and a fall that reshuffled the pack.
In the sprint, Paul Magnier proved strongest, crossing the line ahead of Tobias Lund Andresen (four seconds down in the same time due to bonifications) and Manuele Tarozzi. Ethan Vernon and Jonathan Milan rounded out the top five.

The general classification after Stage 1 sees Paul Magnier in the pink jersey, with Tobias Lund Andresen and Manuele Tarozzi completing the provisional podium, both four seconds behind. Among the Spanish riders, Diego Sevilla performed impressively, securing fifth place overall and becoming the first wearer of the mountains jersey after picking up points on the day’s climbs.

The stage classification highlights the tight finish, with Magnier’s winning margin just a few bike lengths. The intermediate sprints and categorized climbs also shaped the early battle for the jerseys. Sevilla’s aggressive riding on the climbs earned him the blue jersey ahead of the second stage.

With the flat opener done, the race now moves into the first medium-mountain stage on Saturday. Magnier will start in pink, but the general classification contenders are expected to remain closely packed until the first major climbing tests later in the week.
