Mourinho names his World Cup favorites and declares Portugal “can achieve anything”
Jose Mourinho, manager of Benfica, believes Portugal has all the necessary qualities to become one of the standout national teams at this summer’s World Cup.
In an interview with Sport Week magazine, the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss expressed full confidence in his home country’s ability to make a mark on football’s biggest stage.
“Portugal can achieve anything,” the Benfica coach stated. “They have an incredible generation of players. A year ago, they won the Nations League. In 2016, we won the European Championship, and this generation is technically superior to that team. Of course, there’s Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil and Argentina, but Portugal can win this World Cup.”
Mourinho also weighed in on the growing political controversy surrounding the tournament. Although FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed Iran’s participation, pressure to exclude the Asian side continues to mount. Paolo Zampolli, a special envoy for former US President Donald Trump, has strongly argued that Italy should replace Iran if tensions in the Middle East escalate further.
